Tony has always been a great fan of the romanticism of the pre-Raphaelites. He also greatly admires Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, examples of whose work appear below.

A copy of 'Leave the Girls Alone' by John Frederick Herring Snr. (Oil on board: 94cm x 73cm) A signwriter (like Tony), coachman and painter, Herring was employed as a painter of inn signs and coach insignia, which latter work led to him becoming a night coach driver. In his spare time he painted coaches and horses. His talents became recognised by wealthy patrons and he was commissioned to paint their hunters and racehorses.
He was later patronised by HRH the Duchess of Kent and Queen Victoria and came to be recognised as one of the pre-eminent animal painters in Europe.
A copy of 'Hylas and the Nymphs' by J W Waterhouse, known for working in the Pre-Raphaelite style (oil on canvas 163cm x 98cm). He became known for his depictions of women from Greek mytholgy and Arthurian legend.
A copy of 'La Belle dame Sans Merci' by Sir Frank Dicksee (oil on canvas 150cm x 90cm). One of several interpretations inspired by the poem of the same name by John Keats, the subject proved an inspiration to Frank Cowper, J W Waterhouse and Sir William Russell Flint (amongst others).
A detail from 'The Favourite Poet' by Lawrence Alma-Tadema (oil on wood 30cm x 18cm). Dutch by birth, he came to England in his thirties and stayed until his death at 76 in 1912. He was famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire.
A copy of 'The Unconscious Rivals' again by Alma-Tadema (oil on wood 53cm x 45cm). His move to England saw him meet and befriend most of the famous Pre-raphaelite painters, whose influence led him to brighten his colour palette and lighten his brushwork.
He became one of the most famous and highly paid artists of his time.
Commissioning a Reproduction
Having a copy made in oils of a favourite painting can often be more satisfying than a mere print of the original. A reproduction can allow you to emphasise those qualities of the original that you admire most.
If you are interested in commissioning a reproduction of a favourite work of art, either for yourself, or as a surprise for a friend or family member, please contact Tony to discuss the details. Prices for reproductions will vary considerably, depending on size and complexity and will inevitably reflect the time necessary for execution. Please remember there may be copyright restrictions relating to the reproduction of some works of art.
